The UCD Algae Group at University College Dublin looks forward to welcoming Ukrainian scientists interested in working on microalgae as novel food ingredients in our lab.

Funding will be made available under Irish Research Council’s supplemental scheme for Ukrainian researchers (full info: https://research.ie/funding/ukrainian-researchers-scheme/?f=principal-investigator-led ). The positions can be for up to 12 months at Master’s level, PhD level, research-assistant level and postdoctoral scientist level.

We are seeking someone with a background in one or more of the following: environmental sustainability, food science/technology, agriculture science/technology, plant science/technology, chemical engineering, biotechnology, and analytical chemistry.

More information on the project:

Microalgae can play an important role in capturing CO2, treating wastewaters from the agri-food industries and producing alternative biofuels and food products (e.g., omega-3 oils, protein). Microalgae bioproducts, however, are trapped inside thick cell walls which require a lot of energy to break. The project aims to analyse the composition of microalgae cell walls and use these insights to develop more energy-efficient cell-wall disruption technology. This will allow a more cost-effective release of the products inside the biomass.
